Mastering Invisible Familiars’ “Disturbing Wildlife”
I was riding the Manhattan bound J-Train to the Engine Room one day, late in 2013, when I was approached by Jared Samuel (Invisible Familiars) who inquired about my “Dan Millice Mastering” tee shirt. It was some sort of divine-musical-magic that we crossed paths that day on the J-Train. Months later, I got a call from Jared, who had been busy working on Invisible Familiars’ debut full-length album.
As story has it, Jared Samuel went to Jamaica Bay to live secluded on a house boat and write this album. He came back and produced the album with his good friend, Michael Leonhart (Steely Dan/Yoko Ono), along with a long list of amazing musicians and friends, including Robbie Mangano, Tim Kuhl, Jolie Holland, Yuka Honda & Miho Hatori (Cibo Matto), Nels Cline (Wilco, The Nels Cline Singers), Ryan Sawyer, Stuart Bogie (Antibalas), and more.
I received the mixes from Jared for mastering, and what I heard was remarkable. I remember the first song I listened to was one titled “Heavenly All”. I was blown away. Have a listen:
I did three separate album masters for “Disturbing Wildlife” to enhance the listening experience for all current listening methods; CD, Vinyl, and iTunes. I love all three, but if I had to choose a favorite, I would choose to listen to the vinyl.
The album is slated for release on January 27, 2015 via Other Music Recording Co. & Fat Possum Records.
